monster stock hits the teens
Monster (wiki - search - ticker) stock has dipped into the teens today. Time will tell where this ends up for Monster. On one hand, whispers in the industry point to a buyout if the stock dips to around $15. However, one Wall Street insider, who asked to remain nameless, said MNST is “in the worst possible place as a stock,” underscoring a buyout price of around $3 billion based on their current equity position would be very unlikely. The source went on to say the stock should continue...

screw jobs! monster wants to sell phones, lipstick
A loyal reader and not-so-loyal Monster (wiki - search) client sent us the following promo e-mail that went out last week: The recipient followed-up the forwarded message by saying, “Now Monster is offering me cell phones, DVDs, and beauty products. Is this supposed to be a way to make my life as an employer better? “If this was a B-school case, they’d get a F for not understanding basic marketing tenets, like segmentation, targeting and positioning … Oh, and I don’t...

newspaper despair in cleveland
Readers of Ohio’s largest newspaper, The Plain Dealer, were greeted with a personal letter from the publisher on Sunday’s front page yesterday. While the overall message was one of warm-fuzzies, it was sprinkled with apocalyptic distress. Said Terry Egger (PDF), “The changes in our industry make it an exciting time to be in the news business - and a challenging one. We face the most difficult advertising environment in our history, yet remain a talent-, time- and resource-intensive...

jobdig is coming to pillage your local job board
We recently noticed JobDig growing into states previously unoccupied by the niche job board targeting local markets. What used to encompass a small footprint in the middle of the country, now bleeds into places westward and southward. So, we gave head ‘Digger Toby Dayton a shout to see what was going on. Says Dayton, “We’ve launched five markets this year, including AZ (Tucson), UT (Salt Lake City), TX (Amarillo), AR (Little Rock), & TN (Chattanooga). In each market, we...

linkedin gets locked out
Apparently a billion-dollar valuation doesn’t get you a booth at SHRM. LinkedIn was noticeably absent from the expo hall this year. Word is they tried to get in but were too late to overcome a sold-out convention center. The popular professional networking site was a sponsor for the greater show, however. They have also been very active in other recruiting-related conferences. That considered, I expect they’ll be at SHRM next year in full force. ShareThis

Aside from a Facebook “friendship” and an ongoing Scrabulous rivalry, I didn’t know much about Laurie Ruettimann coming into SHRM. Therefore, I was glad to get a few moments with her to discuss her blog, Punk Rock HR, along with a few other initiatives like her HR-related social network. ShareThis

confessions of a former careerbuilder sales guy
The following e-mail was sent to me by a former CareerBuilder (wiki - search) sales rep. The locations and names have been changed to protect the innocent: “In late ‘07 I went through CareerBuilder’s new hire training in Anytown, USA. During training we were told NOT TO TALK TO HR when calling into companies. I am not one to bash my previous employers and I have no reason to be bitter towards CareerBuilder, however I really don’t have many positive things to say about my experience...

interview with careerbuilder’s vp of corporate marketing
In a recent visit to the headquarters of CareerBuilder (wiki - search) in Chicago, we sat down with Jason Ferrara, VP of corporate marketing, who is responsible for acquiring new and retaining current corporate clients. In our 8 mins., we discussed the uniqueness of selling to HR, cutting through the clutter of the loads of job site competition, dealing with cost pressure from the likes of free / cheap sites such as Craigslist and their presence at the upcoming SHRM conference. I mention...

With its new HotHire, officially launched today, Y! is adding real-time candidate recommendations to employers, which are generated as job listings are posted. According to a release, “With the introduction of HotHire, recruiters can jumpstart their urgent candidate searches by receiving real-time recommendations from Yahoo! ontargetjobs ex-ceo forced to step aside by investor?
OnTargetjobs (wiki - search) has a new CEO. His name is Michael Tansey. Their former CEO, Allen Paschal, is now labeled founder and chairman. Paschal gives this reason: The company has grown dramatically since inception … I was wearing too many hats and it was time to get help running the day to day operations. We wanted top talent and felt we could not recruit the proper caliber talent in the COO position. Mike [Tansey] is better suited to manage onTargetjobs as we grow through our next...

cheezhead to exhibit at shrm conference (thanks jobing!)
We’re giddy to announce we’ll be exhibiting at the upcoming SHRM conference next week in Chicago. Our booth number is 4421. However, if you’re not-so-good with numbers, just track down the Jobing.com booth, which won’t be difficult for the fact that it’s about the size of a small metropolitan area all by itself. Why Jobing? As fans of our blog, the gang there was kind enough to donate a 10 x 10 chunk of their real estate to us. Very cool and very generous. In typical...
