ERE Job Boards .Jobs Comment Period Closes Friday. Or Not
If you haven’t already offered your opinion on the future of .jobs, the Internet address extension designed for corporate career sites, better hurry. Friday might be your last chance. Then again it may not be. The Society for Human resource Management is collecting opinions on the wisdom of loosening the restrictions on what names can be linked to a .jobs Internet extension. In a May 8th email, SHRM’s Gary Rubin, point man for the group’s .jobs involvement, said the comment...

Job Board Doctor How branding protects against commoditization
Commoditization – it’s a big word. What does the dictionary tell us? “When a product becomes indistinguishable from others like it and consumers buy on price alone, it becomes a commodity. ” (emphasis added) One of the top concerns expressed in the recent job board industry survey was the commoditization of job postings – and by default, the job boards that provide those job postings. In short, if job postings are just job postings, then the lowest...

Born Blog The Mobile Web - Statistics
There have been some great blog posts coming out of allthetopbananas recently, relating to mobile web browsing. The enthusiasm for this is, no doubt, driven by the company’s recent dive into the mobile job board apps market. The company recently celebrated the launch of their latest iPhone applications (review coming soon). Dave Martin’s recent post includes a great slideshow of the mobile space and is well worth reading. Rather than paraphrase the content we’ve embedded the presentation...

Born Blog Job Board ROI
A great blog post by whatjobsite has us talking about the survival of job boards at born today. There’s little doubt that the days of Launch (site), Load (up on users) and Laugh (as you sell for millions) are over for job boards; new sites have to have a solid offering (usually niche) and be ready for the long term. There’ll be some quick winners, but these are likely to be the boards with innovating technology. Given the figures quoted in whatjobsite’s post (up to £40 to attract...

Born Blog A Click Too Far (The Painful Recruitment Process)
Recently, while deeply engaged in one of my typical “the Internet has revolutionised recruitment” rants, I was cut off mid-sentence by the comment “yes, but not all revolutions are for the better”. Despite my protests, my Job Seeking Friend (JSF) quickly demonstrated one of the problems online recruitment has brought to the process.  Let me lead you through the conversation: JSF: “I want a PHP developer role in London” Me: “Workhound is a good place to...

Born Blog Monster Hotjobs
In case you’ve missed it, something big has happened across-the-pond in the world of digital recruiting.  Two of the big players in the sector, have now become one, with Monster buying Yahoo Hotjobs for USD 225 million (GBP 143 million). It’s an interesting development, particularly given the ill health of the recruitment sector both home and abroad, but the deal is unlikely to have much to do with the economics of the sector.  Yahoo, who have had a history of bold acquisitions,...

Born Blog Online Recruitment 2009
It’s been a difficult year for the online recruitment sector. Like many industries, the recession has bitten hard; the plummeting job numbers on job boards has been an obvious sign of the pain the sector has experienced. But it’s also been a year of unfaltering optimism for the value technology can bring to the recruitment process. Take social media for example. The explosion in companies using Facebook as a communication tool and social branding platform has been impressive. Personally,...

Jason Gorham Adult Internet Users Grow To 35%
The share of adult internet users who have a profile on an online social network site has more than quadrupled in the past four years -- from 8% in 2005 to 35% now, according to the Pew Internet & American Life Project's December 2008 tracking survey. While media coverage and policy attention focus heavily on how children and young adults use social network sites, adults still make up the bulk of the users of these websites. Adults make up a larger portion of the US population than teens,...

Jason Gorham Analyst: Half of 'social media campaigns' will flop
As seen on Cnet Adam Sarner, an analyst with market research firm Gartner, has projected that over 75 percent of Fortune 1000 companies with Web sites will have undertaken some kind of online social-networking initiative for marketing or customer relations purposes. But, he added in an interview with CNET News, 50 percent of those campaigns will be classified as failures. Sarner plans to present his results at the annual Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2008, which takes place October 12-16 in Orlando,...
