How to make money – revenue models for job boards
I’ve been cataloging job boards for the past two years (for obvious reasons), and frankly, I’ve been surprised at how many sites rely on candidates for their primary revenue stream. Making money, of course, is always a primary focus for job board operators; after all, job boards are businesses, and if businesses don’t turn a profit, they disappear. So inevitably, anyone entering the industry will ask: “How can you make money with a job board?” The... |

Dice Bests 2nd Quarter Estimates
Job board owner Dice Holdings reported this morning that it earned 6 cents a share on 2nd quarter revenue of $29.9 million, coming in better than Wall Street’s expectations. Analysts estimated revenue would be right around $28.7 million with an average earnings estimate of 5 cents a share. Investors bid up the price of Dice Holdings share by better than 5 percent. In afternoon trading in New York, DHX shares were selling at $8.29. Growth was driven by ClearanceJobs.com, a job board for workers... |

Network Launch is Dice Transition to Relationship Building
It’s a big day for Dice today. The IT specialty site officially opens its Dice Talent Network, while its parent company, Dice Holdings, reports its second quarter financial performance. Analysts, reported by Yahoo Finance, expect the job board company to report earnings per share in the range of 5 to 7 cents a share, with the consensus at a nickle. Besides its flagship IT site, Dice also owns a few other boards, among them eFinancialCareers and ClearanceJobs and a company that produces job... |

Privacy, Transparency Being Addressed By New Facebook Sourcing Tool
I had an informative, and reassuring conversation this morning with the founder and head of BranchOut, a Facebook app that I wrote about yesterday, which has a potentially valuable future as a sourcing tool. Rick Marini, an entrepreneur with an impressive pedigree, was concerned enough about the transparency issues I raised in the post, that he pinged me to clarify a few things. What he said was encouraging. “We are very aware of the privacy issues,” he said at the outset of our conversation... |

TBI and PTSD in the Workplace
The fog of war or the scent of battle is hard to fathom as are many of the trials our military must face, but imagine when the young men and women who bravely served our country return to this great nation as a civilian and find even more challenges during their job search. Yesterday DirectEmployers Association was honored to have Megan Krause and Lisa Stern from America’s Heroes At Work present “Demystifying Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in... |

Being social isn’t enough
Sorry to tell you this – but job boards are businesses. They make money. They produce results. Why are these statements such a shock to social media enthusiasts? Just like Apple and Google, job boards rely on customers who pay for results. Perhaps there’s the rub – most social media tools and sites are free (at the moment). Since job boards aren’t free, they are by nature less lovable and effective than (insert the name of your favorite social media... |

Hundreds of Comments Flood in as .Jobs Comments Close
If the sheer number of comments decided the matter, the proposal to expand the use of .jobs addresses would be DOA. In the week since opponents of the plan launched a campaign against it, more than 200 comments were posted to the public forum run by the group that will decide the matter. Not all the comments opposed the expansion; however, most did. The majority appear to stem from an email campaign launched by the International Association of Employment Web Sites, the trade group for the world’s... |

Fear
Many job board operators are fearful of the .jobs expansion. The value we provide to job seekers and employers flows through our domains whether we like it or not. Many of us chose those domains long before we knew what we were doing or where our businesses were going. But we know domains are important. And we care deeply about anything so central to our businesses because this is our livelihood. As entrepreneurs the health of our businesses shape our lives and our kids lives and last but... |

Will Careersnotlateraltransfers.com Soon Replace All Job Boards?
Something is fundamentally wrong with the hiring process used by most companies in the U.S. We tend to hire too many people who are willing to take a job until something better comes along. Companies don’t implement this “holding pattern” concept intentionally, but at the core level the hiring process most companies use involves matching people who have the requisite skills and are looking, with jobs they’ve done before. While they might get lucky and find someone who sees the job as a... |

Open Letter to ICANN: Reject the .jobs Amendment!
For months, John Zappe has been covering the .jobs saga here on ERE.net, so regular ERE readers will be familiar with much of the background. If you are new to the story, you can catch up here and here. Today is the final day of ICANN’s open comment period before they consider Employ Media’s .jobs charter amendment. It’s our last chance to be heard. I’ve emailed ICANN the following letter urging that they reject the proposed amendment, and it is posted alongside hundreds... |

.Jobs Comments Flooding In As Comment Deadline Nears
With only one day left in the public comment period, the blitz promised by opponents of the .jobs expansion plan is all but overwhelming the proponents. Since the metaphorical shooting began Monday, 43 comments as of this writing have been posted to the forum run by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. That’s the organization that will decide whether to open up the .jobs addresses to non-company names. Rules now limit the awarding of a .jobs address only to employers... |

.jobs - Gerry says it all
Does anyone know more about .jobs than Gerry Crispin? He called me yesterday with a bone to pick about my blog post. It is not really accurate to say that SHRM has been championing diversity.jobs. He was right, that's too strong a statement. Nevertheless, Gerry is opposed to the .jobs expansion. There are a number of striking statements in his opposition letter below but this one stands out above the others "Job seekers enter a toxic environment in their efforts to secure a position -... |

What .jobs could be
I've been thinking a lot about this .jobs thing. Part of me could care less since I dont see any immediate impact for my biz, but part of me would like to see a fair and transparent use of these new domains. One company should not control the domain. So what would be the best way to use these domains in a perfect world? One that would enable all constituents to participate...job seekers, employers and job boards... The answer: … |
